If you wish to consult a book chapter or journal article that is held in our closed stacks or in off-site storage, you can do so without having to visit the Library in person. With our scanning service, we will scan and email you an electronic copy.
This service is free for SHL members (exceptions apply).
How to use the service
When searching for items on our Catalogue you will see a ‘Request a scan of a journal article /book chapter’ button if they are held in our closed stacks.
To request a scan, simply click on the button and complete the form.
What we will scan
One chapter or article from a book or journal kept either in the depository at Egham or in our closed stacks at Senate House.
We will not scan the following:
- Requests for more than one article from a single journal issue
- Requests for more than one chapter or more than 5 per cent of a book
- Anything on the open shelves on floors 4 – 7
The Digitisation Studio must scan the following items and there is a charge for this service:
- Anything in the archives
- Anything classified as ‘rare book’
- Anything with ‘Special Collections’ in the location
- Any other media like LPs, negatives, or slides
We reserve the right to refuse to scan any request, based on the fragility or age of an item, or accessibility. We will always get in touch to explain why a request has been refused.
Please see our document supply service for requests not included in this service.
Who can use the service
Any of our current members can use the service except for:
- Day ticket and weekly ticket holders
- Anyone with a blocked record due to overdue books
- Anyone with other issues affecting their borrowing/usage rights
We reserve the right to refuse a request based on any of the above, or any individual case.
How long will it take?
We will aim to fulfil all requests within two working days.
If the item is missing, or there is another reason we cannot supply the item, we will let you know as soon as possible.
