Connect to wifi
Library members are able to connect to WiFi (wireless network) from all areas inside the Library.
What you will need
- Wireless network name: UoL Libraries
- Username: Membership number
- Password: Last name
Regulations and Code of Conduct
The Library wireless network is provided by the 嗨碰视频 Computer Centre. Consequently, all users must adhere to CoSector's terms and conditions [PDF], must agree to abide by the , and the 嗨碰视频鈥檚 Equality Policy [PDF].
Should you not comply with the above regulations, your access may be either suspended or terminated.
How to connect to wifi
- Go to: Start > Control Panel > Network Connections.
- Select the icon labelled Wireless Network Connection and right click on it. Select Properties from the menu.
- Click on the Wireless Networks tab. Press the Add button, which will bring up the Wireless Network Properties dialogue. The first tab in the wireless properties dialogue is labelled Association. Fill in the following values: Network name (SSID): UoL Libraries; Network authentication: WPA; Data encryption: TKIP
- Now select the second tab in the wireless properties dialogue labelled Authentication. Select EAP Type: ProtectedEAP and untick the box labelled Authenticate as computer when computer information is available.
- Then press the button labelled Properties.
- On the Protected EAP Properties dialogue, untick the box labelled Validate server certificate and press the Configure button next to Select Authentication Method. In the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties dialogue, untick Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any).
- Click OK on all boxes to close them
Connecting to the wireless network
- A speech balloon should pop up from the system tray at the bottom right-hand side of your screen. Click on it.
- Windows will now open a new dialogue box asking for your user name and password.
- Enter the barcode number from the front of the library card (without the spaces) as the user name.
- Enter your last name in lower case as the password. For example, if your last name is 鈥淪mith鈥, you would need to type 鈥渟mith鈥 as your password.
- If your login is successful, then the entry in the wireless network list for UoL Libraries should change to Connected. You will now be able to use the Internet.
- If your login was unsuccessful, then a balloon will pop up asking you to try and enter the details again.
- At this point, you can either click on the balloon which will open the login dialogue again, or disconnect from the wireless network and try again.
- Click Start > Control Panel
- Double click Network & Sharing Centre
- Once the Network & Sharing Centre opens click Manage wireless network.
- In the Manage Wireless Networks dialogue window click Add
- Click Manually create a network profile.
- Enter UoL Libraries in the Network name text box.
- Select WPA-Enterprise from the Security type selection drop-down and an Encryption type of TKIP. The Start this connection automatically checkbox needs a tick in it. Click Next.
- Click Change connection settings
- The property page for the wireless connection just created opens. Enable 鈥楥onnect automatically when this network is in range鈥 and 鈥楥onnect to a more preferred network if available鈥.
- Switch to the security tab of this property page to verify you have the setting. Click the Settings鈥 command button.
- Untick the Validate server certificate and tick Enable Fast Reconnect checkboxes. Click the Configure鈥 command button. Untick the Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any). Click OK.
- Click the buttons of any open dialogue windows.
Important For Windows 7 users
Untick Remember my credentials for this connection each time I鈥檓 logged on. Click on Advanced Settings, tick Specify Authentication Mode and select User Authentication. Click OK and close.
- You should see a pop-up in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen asking you to provide login credentials. Enter the login details (username is your membership number and password is your surname in lower case) remembering to leave the Login domain textbox blank. If the credentials are correct you should get connected to the UoL Libraries wireless network.
Quick Connect:
- Hover over the right side of the screen and select 鈥楽ettings鈥
- Go to 鈥楴etworks鈥 and tap/click on UoL Libraries
- When asked enter your username enter your membership number and your password is your surname in lowercase.
Connect Manually
- From the new Metro Start screen press Desktop.
- Right-click on the wireless icon in the bottom right of the desktop and select 鈥淥pen Network and Sharing Centre鈥.
- Select 鈥淪etup a new connection or network鈥.
- Select 鈥淢anually connect to a wireless network鈥 and click 鈥楴ext鈥.
- Enter the following details:Network name: UoL Libraries
- Security type: WPA2-Enterprise
- Encryption type: AES
- Click 鈥楴ext鈥.
- Click 鈥楥hange connection settings鈥.
- Select the 鈥楽ecurity tab鈥.
- Click 鈥楽ettings鈥.
- Untick the box labelled 鈥楥onnect to these servers鈥.
- Click 鈥楢dvanced Settings鈥.
- Tick the box labelled 鈥楽pecify authentication mode鈥 and select 鈥楿ser authentication鈥 from the drop down menu.
- Click 鈥極K鈥, 鈥極K鈥 again and 鈥楥lose鈥
You are now ready to connect.
- Click on the wireless signal icon in the bottom right of the desktop.
- Select 鈥楿oL Libraries鈥 and press 鈥楥onnect鈥.
- When asked enter your username enter your membership number and your password is your surname in lowercase.
- Click 鈥極K鈥.
You should now be connected to the UoL Libraries wireless network.
Apple MacOS (formerly OSX)
- Click on Airport at the top right of your screen
- Click on UoL Libraries in the list of connections
- Enter your library card barcode number (which appears on the front of your Library card) as user name
- Enter your surname (in lower case) as password. See the login information section above for more details
- Click OK. Click Continue in the warning message that pops up
If this does not work, try the following:
- On Airport click Join a Network.
- From the option list select 鈥楿oL Libraries鈥.
- Under encryption type select WPA 鈥 Enterprise
- Enter your library card barcode number (which appears on the front of your Library card) as user-name.
- Enter your surname as password

- Click on the wireless icon in the top bar and choose UoL Libraries
- Set the EAP method to PEAP
- Set Phase 2 authentication to MSCHAPv2
- Change the Server CA certificate to Do Not Check
- Enter your Identity as your membership number
- Enter your surname as your password.
Left-click on the wireless networks icon in the top right of the screen, and right-click on UoL Libraries:
- Authentication: WPA Enterprise
- EAP Method: PEAP
- Identity = library card number
- Password = surname (lower case)
- Anonymous Identity: leave blank
- CA Certificate File: In the Choose a Certificate Authority certificate鈥 dialog, navigate to /etc/ssl/certs and select the 鈥楢ddTrust_External_Root.pem鈥 certificate and click 鈥橭pen鈥
- Tap Settings > Wi-Fi, and make sure Wi-Fi is turned on. Your device will search for available Wi-Fi networks.
- Tap the name of the Wi-Fi network you'd like to join.
- When asked enter your username enter your membership number and your password is your surname in lowercase.
- After you've joined the network, you should see a tick next to the network, and the wireless symbol in the upper-left side of your display.
- Open the Settings app.
- Choose Wi-Fi.
- On some Samsung tablets, you find the Wi-Fi item on the Connections tab. Choose Wi-Fi to view a list of available Wi-Fi networks on the right side of the screen. Otherwise, the list shows up full screen.
- Choose a wireless network from the list.
- When no wireless networks are listed, you鈥檙e sort of out of luck regarding Wi-Fi access from your current location.
- When asked enter your username enter your membership number and your password is your surname in lowercase.
- Touch the Show Password check box so that you can see what you鈥檙e typing; some of those network passwords can be long.
- Touch the Connect button.
- The network is connected immediately.
Troubleshooting tips
Windows users:
- If you are using Windows 7 or Vista, please check that the last part of the process has been completed properly.
- Please ensure that your surname is typed in lower case.
- Try refreshing your adapter by going into Control Panel > System > Device Manager > Network Adapters and disable your wireless adapter. Leave a moment and then enable 鈥 this refreshes your adapter settings.
- Every now and again 鈥 although it is rare 鈥 the network might not be available due to technical problems. If this happens and the service is temporarily unavailable, please be patient as the service should soon resume.
Apple users:
- Some Snow Leopard users have reported problems logging on to WiFi with Airport: this is resolved by restarting Airport or restarting the device.

Eduroam
You may also connect to the wireless network using the if your home institution is a member. You must set this up before coming to the Library as staff are not able to assist with setting up authentication to your home institution.
