Knowledge and the mind

Senate House Library’s Knowledge and the Mind collections cross the deep divide between philosophy and empirical psychology, offering a uniquely inter-disciplinary means of approaching the study of ideas across time and in diverse transnational and geographical contexts.

Researchers will be intrigued by distinctive and often eccentric collections in and between areas such as the History of Psychology, the History of Science and Medicine, Feminist Philosophy, the History of Political and Economic Thought, Sexuality and Gender, to name but a few of the many areas of specialism represented.

There is much in our special and modern library collections to stimulate those interested in new viewpoints beyond canonical Eurocentrism through exploring intellectual histories of Latin America and Commonwealth and adopting a more ‘global’ frame of reference to the study of ideas.

Researchers who are exploring thought from a social history lens will be inspired by notable archives and ephemera in left wing culture and radicalism in the 19th and 20th centuries. The study of thought through material culture is strongly supported by our remarkable Manuscript and Book studies collection, as is the study of the Human Body and the History of Emotions by holdings across the library.
