Art in the archives

Sketches, drawings, watercolours, engravings and oil paintings have entered the archives mainly within broader collections: sometimes, indeed, as sketches within notebooks.

A few manuscripts or archives are entirely pictorial, most notably the Grieve family collection of theatre designs, 1813-1857 () and a contemporary scroll depicting the funeral of . Some archival collections contain correspondence etc. about art, notably the and the .
