Samantha Ahern

Faculty Learning Technology Lead for the Faculty of the Built Environment at UCL

Samantha's experience spans Secondary and Higher Education, and has an interesting combination of pedagogical, intelligent systems and information security knowledge and experience. Underpinning her work and key areas of interest are equity and social justice.

Samantha Ahern’s particular area of interest and research is learning analytics with regards to student wellbeing and compassionate pedagogy. Having both published and presented on these topics.

She is also an active member of the Anti-racism in Learning Technology working group and is currently exploring how to introduce decolonisation concepts to learning design frameworks. Samantha has the combined experience of both being a distance educated student and designing and creating distance learning.

Additionally, Samantha describes herself as an open scholar. In her own research she utilises open practices as much as possible, and is an advocate for reproducible research.

She is a graduate of the Mozilla Open Leaders programme and has mentored a number of projects participating in the Open Education for a Better World (OE4BW) programme.

A key interest area at present is the ethics of Open Educational Resources (OER), in particular considerations around capability building and the avoidance of stealth re-colonisation.
