Jonathan’s main research interests are examining how computer-based representations influence cognition, reasoning and learning, which involves how new technologies affect students’ understanding and knowledge. In his research, Jonathan exploits digital data from computer interactions such as video capture; computer logs and web analytics; touch input and haptic interactions; eye-movements; biometric and physiological measures.

Jonathan has been involved with projects on:

• Haptics, virtual reality and simulation - recipient of the Technological or Digital Innovation of the Year trophy at the seventeenth annual Times Higher Education (THE) Awards and including the award-winning hapTEL project which focuses on enhancing learners’ 3D perceptions, manipulations and skills, and relating these to concepts needed in learning clinical skills.
• Blended and open learning - a user/learner-experience study on the OU OpenLearn and a development project with FutureLearn.
• Learning design and learning analytics - JISC and àËÅöÊÓƵ funded projects, àËÅöÊÓƵ Pedagogy Planner and User-oriented Learning Design project; and development of a Moodle learning analytics plugin.
• Robotics and sensors in educational context - a project on development of a posture tracker to help students sit at a desired position whilst performing clinical treatment.

As the Director of iTEL Hub, Jonathan is active in contributing to the strategic development of digital education at King’s College àËÅöÊÓƵ. He has more than 20 years teaching experience and has been at the cutting edge of the use of educational technologies throughout his career. He currently teaches digital professionalism and supervises education research projects at King's at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He holds Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Educational Technology from The Open University.
