Luke is a Lecturer in Technology-Enhanced Learning and Head of the eLearning Unit in the Centre for Technology in Education at St George’s, àËÅöÊÓƵ, supporting the delivery of blended and distance education in the health professions. His work includes collaborative projects around virtual patients and data standards in education.
With a background in computing and education, his work and research are primarily focused on the application of virtual patients and the use of data standards in health professions education. He received his PhD in 2020 at Karolinska Institutet; his thesis explored the design of virtual patients for teaching medical error in blended settings. He has published papers on the impact of virtual patient usage upon learners, and widely peer reviews in the field.
At St George’s Luke supports the work of the Centre for Technology in Education in delivering blended and distance learning, and has been recognised as a Senior Fellow of AdvanceHE. As well as supporting taught programmes and the educational technology infrastructure within the institution he worked to establish St George’s portfolio of MOOC courses targeting professional learners. He has authored the project evaluation strategies for several EC-funded collaborative projects aiming to utilise technology to facilitate curriculum transformation across multiple international institutions.
Luke is a member of the steering committee at the data standards organisation MedBiquitous, part of the American Association for Medical Colleges, and was chair of that committee in 2021. He was part of the working group that created the ANSI/MEDBIQ VP.10.1-2010 MedBiquitous Virtual Patient standard, and served on their technical steering committee for several years.
