Our regular CODE webinars provide a platform for exploration, exchange and learning from the innovation and development taking place in digital learning.

The regular Experiences in Digital Learning webinars from the Centre for Online and Distance Education provide the opportunity to explore the rapid innovations and changes we are seeing in digital learning, teaching and assessment. Our next Experiences in Digital Learning webinar takes place on Thursday July 4 2024, 14.00 – 15.00 BST. In this webinar, chaired by CODE fellow Dr Martin Compton, we respond to the growing interest in AI in education by exploring how AI is being used in Higher Education to support learners, examining this issue from two perspectives.
Firstly Kerith George-Briant asks “What is the role of higher education?” Is it to produce students that are independent, productive, and participatory? If the answer is yes, then let’s discuss the role of assistive technology and generative AI. This talk will ask you to consider whether ALL students and their learning needs have been considered in your current institution’s guidance on the use of (Gen)AI.
The second half will introduce how the Ƶ Careers Service has integrated AI to enhance employability education for distance learners around the globe. These range from how to smartly utilise AI to support job hunting, how to get a high quality AI CV review and how to use LLMs to further enrich and critically evaluate inter-cultural transdisciplinary skills.
Our speakers
Kerith George-Briant has a background in English Language Teaching and supporting students to develop their study skills. She has been working in Higher Education since the turn of the century (in South Korea and Scotland) and currently manages the Learner Development Service at Abertay University. Her academic interests include creating equity in the classroom, helping support students as they negotiate local expectations of academic writing, and the uses of Generative AI.
Laura Brammar is the Associate Director of the Ƶ Careers Service for Online, Distance and Flexible Learners and leads on the careers and employability curriculum. Prior to that role she worked for 20 years as a Senior Careers Consultant and is the instructor of on award-winning Enhance Your Careers and Employability Skills Coursera MOOC, which engaged 89,000 global active learners. Her early career was as an English Literature Lecturer at a Tertiary College in the UK. Laura has also worked as an Education Advisor in Awassa, Ethiopia as well as for a local Board of Education in Nagasaki, Japan. In addition to her teaching qualifications, Laura has an MSc Organisational Behaviour, PG Cert Career Development and Coaching and BA English and she is a Senior Fellow of the HEA. Her work on careers education has been published in a variety of academic journals
