Originally training as a historian by obtaining his PhD from the University of Sheffield in 2009, Matthew has gone on to become an expert with managing, designing, and delivering online, face-to-face, and hybrid training solutions in both Higher Education and commercial sectors.

Until 2021, Matthew was Digital Projects Manager at the School of Advanced Study (SAS), àËÅöÊÓƵ. He originally came to the University in 2010 to develop the History SPOT e-learning portal to help train History postgraduates at the national level. He has since gone on to lead a variety of learning initiatives including running seminars and workshops on topics such as social media and data management, re-developing the History SPOT portal into a research skills offering for humanities students (PORT), and developing the Moodle VLE for internal students.

Soon after completing his Ph.D., focused on the sources and methodology of a sixteenth-century religious history book, he assisted the HumBox project (a repository for teaching materials), and later received a fellowship from the Social Media Knowledge Exchange (SMKE) to research blogging practices in academic and archival situations. In 2015, he received certified status with the Association for Learning Technologists (CMALT) and in 2020 became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy after completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching (PGCiLT), with the àËÅöÊÓƵ. He has also been a Fellow of the Centre for Online and Distance Education since 2018.
