Voices of change: Senate House Library highlights 'Modern Radicals' this July
For this campaign, we are focusing on Senate House Library’s collections from the ‘Enlightenment’ through to the modern day, covering people and subjects including William Hone (1780-1842) and Goldsmiths’ Library of Economic Literature, through to our Cartonera Publishers Collection.
The library’s recent Modern Radicals exhibition defined a radical as someone who “stood up to the actions of governments that did not adequately represent the people.” This definition encompasses figures like Jamaican-born , who fought the Nazis and racism; Indian-born , a prominent figure in 1970s industrial disputes, or the Heisler Collection. Each, in their own way took significant risks to improve the communities around them.
This month’s theme pays tribute to radicals worldwide – those whose bravery, selflessness and vision effected global change. Throughout July, the Library’s website will feature highlights from our collections and the individuals behind them. Also check our social media channels regularly – hashtag: #SHLModernRadicals.
