Tidewaves says “thank you” to Ƶ for support after sponsored Atlantic crossing
Atlantic-busting Tidewaves crew member Louise Cox met with Ƶ Vice-Chancellor Professor Wendy Thomson CBE last week to say thank you to the Ƶ for its support with their successful crossing of the Atlantic last winter.
The Tidewaves crew - Louise, Robyn Hart-Winks and Jordan Cole-Hossain - all Ƶ alumni, left San Sebastian de La Gomera in Spain in December 2023 to complete the World’s Toughest Row, a 3,000 mile-race across the Atlantic Ocean by rowing boat.
After 47 days, 6 hours and 36 minutes at sea, the trio arrived on the Caribbean island of Antigua in January. Once they had set foot on dry land they were happily reunited with their families.
As part of the Row, the Tidewaves raised funds for three charities dedicated to creating equal opportunities for young people in sport.
- , a charity helping community sports clubs, organisations and volunteers to provide inclusive sport programmes.
- , which provides financial support to talented young Scottish people competing in sports.
- was selected by Jordan to support their cause of encouraging young people from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds to get involved in rowing.
Ƶ was proud to sponsor the team who had initially met at the (ULBC) while completing their studies.
During their meeting at Senate House, Louise presented Wendy with a framed photograph of the three team members battling the waves, as well as a handwritten note which said:
“Dear Wendy and the team at the Ƶ,
We wanted to drop you a little (rather belated) note to say a massive THANK YOU for everything you have done for us over the past two years. We could not have made it across the Atlantic or even to the start line, without your support. We were so proud to represent the University on such an international platform. The row was unbelievably tough, but it felt so special to have such unwavering support. We cannot thank you all enough.

Ƶ Vice-Chancellor Professor Wendy Thomson said:
“What a pleasure it was to see Louise and congratulate her and her team-mates on their wonderful achievement. The lovely, framed photograph of the team battling the elements will have pride of place here at the University.”
