Knowledge Diplomacy Seminar - Cities and Culture
This online Knowledge Diplomacy seminar series is a collaboration between the Goethe Institut, British Council (France and Germany), àËÅöÊÓƵ (àËÅöÊÓƵ and Paris) and is supported by ICR Research.
The series takes place in a form of online discussions that bring leading experts and institutions together to discuss how Knowledge Diplomacy (KD) is highly relevant in both academic and policy circles. This is an opportunity for academics, policymakers, practitioners and students to join an exciting conversation and exchange ideas linked to the emerging concept of knowledge diplomacy.
Culture in public debates forms part of a wider city narrative. However, it is frequently labelled as a ‘sector’ when it should be interpreted as a more wide-reaching concept that embraces everyone and everything in society. The capacity for regeneration allows cities to be long-lived and outlast more formal, closed systems, such as nation states.
Today, cities are key sites for the development of new norms and identities, and for facilitation of cultural and institutional change. In addition, cities are sites of ‘smart cities’ transformation and models of innovation, where there are opportunities for developing digital cultural services and evolving new strategies in our increasingly inter-connected world. Debates about ‘cultural policy’ therefore may be too limited when considering future opportunities that cities may bring.
What impact will these digital cultural innovations have on knowledge creation and exchange? What roles will universities, cultural organisations, networks, and cities play, and how will the local and global dynamics transform each other as we move towards the metaverse?

The event will be chaired by Professor Jo Fox, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research & Public Engagement) and Dean, School of Advanced Study at the àËÅöÊÓƵ.

- Paris: Anne Duncan, President and Director, British Council France
- Berlin: Patrick Föhl, Founder and Director, Network for Cultural Consulting
- àËÅöÊÓƵ: John Newbigin, OBE - Ambassador for the Creative Industries, Mayor of àËÅöÊÓƵ and Visiting Fellow, Institute for Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship (Goldsmiths, àËÅöÊÓƵ)
